Okay superfans. Who knows if John played St. Patrick’s Day twice in the same year on Last Call? If memory serves, he played Neon and SPD on the same evening aired first on April 23, 2002 acoustic. The posts on YouTube are incorrect because Last Call didn’t exist in 2001. What I don’t remember is the band being there. Anyone?

I was going to Berklee College of Music in 1997. My mom and dad would give me $250 a month to spend, but I started overdrawing from the bank, so I was below broke. My dad sent me a check for $250 and wrote, ‘John, remember me when you go platinum.’ I held onto that note through everything. Two days ago, he got his platinum plaque with that very piece of paper inside the glass. — John Mayer, 2002 (via jmmagroup)

About 10 years ago I was the Associate Producer on John Mayer’s first music video, No Such Thing, directed by Sam Erickson. I was cleaning up some book shelves last night and came upon some old photos from the shoot. This is a print I made from some of the behind-the-scenes stuff I shot. This was rehearsal (his shirt is different from the video) and you can see the crane-cam on the right swoopin in for a shot of John.

The video earned him a nomination for Best New Artist at the MTV Awards in 2002. It was great to shoot in the Georgia Theatre in Athens where I had seen so many shows growing up and so many great bands had their start. Good to see it’ll re-open in August after a fire closed it down a few years ago.

A new unpublished photo of John always can pop up…

So grateful that you shared this with us. Would love to get down there for Col Bruce.
